Jason Bartels, 36, and Rebecca Bartels, 33, both of Brady were killed Tuesday night when their SUV went off the highway near Brady and rolled.

Jason and Rebecca were in-laws, according to a family friend. Jason leaves a son and Rebecca leaves two daughters.

Kara Johnson, 31, of Brady was seriously injured and is in a Denver hospital, where she was flown during the night by helicopter. She has three children.

According to a reconstruction of the accident, the three were westbound in a 2013 Hyundai Tucson when the compact SUV drove off the north edge of U.S. Highway 30, over corrected and eventually rolled several times.

All three people inside the vehicle were ejected, the sheriff’s office said.

The wreck occurred three miles east of Brady.

Lincoln County sheriff’s deputies and Nebraska State Troopers responded to the call at 11:10 p.m. Tuesday night.

Rebecca Bartels died at the scene. Jason Bartels was taken by ambulance to Gothenburg Hospital, where he died of injuries.

Johnson was taken first to Great Plains Health with life threatening injuries, and later flown to a Denver hospital, the sheriff’s office said.

Seatbelts were not in use and alcohol appeared to be a factor in the wreck, investigators said.

Rescue units from Gothenburg, Brady and North Platte also responded to the call.
