Lightning set hay on fireTell North Platte what you think

Hay continues to smolder Monday morning.

A lighting strike shortly after dawn Saturday set fire to a pile of hay at Olsen’s Feedyard along U.S. Highway 30 between North Platte and Hershey.

North Platte Fire Chief Dennis Thompson said the 911 call came at 7:25 a.m.

Fire crews as well as workers at the feedyard contained the fire and isolated the burning bales as much as possible, but 300 bales were reportedly burned, Thompson said.

Hershey and Sutherland volunteer fire fighters also responded. Fire fighters remained on the scene until 4:30 p.m. Saturday, to guard against the danger of the fire flaring up again.

“There is not much you can do with hay fires but pull apart and isolate the hay as much as you can,” Thompson said, “You can pour water on it all day, and there will still be spots that will smolder.”

The North Platte Fire Department sent fire engines and tankers, as well as grass rigs to successfully contain the flames, Thompson said.
